Diagram of the Dynamics of the Physical Embodiment of Desire
Generative Drawings
Custom Software & Display, 2006 - 2007
Adam Chapman

Diagram of the Dynamics of the Physical Embodiment of Desire is a series of generative drawings about the tension within the experience of anticipation. Programmatic rules are applied to colored forms that move down the visual field. These rules are altered so that the discrete elements periodically form drawings of birds in flight. A tension grows between the merging of the abstract forms and the formation of more legible images. Every second of the installation is uniquely generated by the rules of the system; a complete, one-hour cycle forms more than fifty drawings.

The work is shown in two forms: as a computer-generated work forming all 50 drawings, and as looped DVDs of a single drawing forming over and over again.

Both are size-variable, wall-mounted, and framed like traditional drawings.

Diagram of the Dynamics of the Physical Embodiment of Desire was completed with the generous support of the MacDowell Colony.
